The Super NES Smurfs Game Page

What the SNES Smurfs game box would have looked like if it were released in the U.S.

For a game that's created for a children's audience, the Super NES Smurfs game is rather challenging to play, and probably more so if one is playing it on an actual Super NES game system -- which most people won't likely be able to do unless they owned a PAL-compatible Super NES.  For those who are curious about playing this game, this page was created to help you familiarize yourself with the entire game.

The Controls Of This Game

In case you're playing this game on an emulator, which is probably the best route given its difficulty and length, here is how the controls work when you are playing it.

The controls for the Mega Drive version of The Smurfs are as follows:

And for playing the Gameboy Advance adaptation called Revenge Of The Smurfs:

By pressing Down and then Left or Right, Smurf can crawl through narrow spaces.

As Jokey, pressing Down allows him to plant his surprises in places where he can blow up things.

The Bonus Items Of This Game

Along the way, your Smurf hero can find items that will help him on his journey:

Mushrooms

These contain other bonus items which are revealed when Smurf jumps on them.

Raspberries

Not smurfberries, but they do help your Smurf hero maintain his health by adding one life unit (up to a maximum of four).

Sarsaparilla Leaf

These are useful items to collect; 25 of them will give you an extra Smurf life.  I'm not sure what these do in the Gameboy Advance adaptation of the game.

Smurf Doll

Each of these will give you an extra Smurf life.  These do not appear in the Gameboy Advance adaptation since the player has an infinite number of lives.

Stars

Collecting 25 of these items will allow you to play a bonus level where your Smurf hero can collect three of the previous bonus items listed.  In the Gameboy Advance adaptation, collecting five of these on all of the levels in a certain section will allow the player to unlock an additional mini-game.

Golden Hats

These appear only in the Gameboy Advance adaptation of the game.  These serve as checkpoints so that your Smurf hero doesn't have to go back to the beginning of the level in order to complete it.

The Levels Of This Game

The level descriptions also correspond to the Mega Drive and Mega CD versions of this game, in addtion to the Gameboy Advance adaptation called Revenge Of The Smurfs (with some adjustments here and there).  All screenshots (except for the finish) were taken from the Super NES version through a Super NES emulator.

NOTE: All references to Greedy in this section refer to the original comic book version of his character and NOT the cartoon version, where he is the analog of Baker/Cook Smurf.

Level 1 — The Village

Probably the easiest level to play.  Here Hefty has to get past his fellow Smurfs as he makes his way into the forest.  Some of them will open windows to dump out water, some will dig or plow up dirt with a snail, some will ride pulleys up and down with sandbags, and some will swoop down upon you with wings.  He can enter Smurf houses and pop up through the chimneys to collect stars and bonus items.

Level 2 — The Forest

A two-part level.  In the first part, Hefty must make his way past worms, porcupines, falling apples, and sleeping moles.  He must also cross chasms, sometimes by riding on falling leaves.  He can enter hollowed trunks and holes in the ground to collect bonus items. In the second part, he must hop his way up a tree while avoiding squirrels dropping acorns and falling apples.

Level 3 — The Bridge

The bridge is broken, and Hefty must get across it to the other side.  Here the hazards you must avoid are butterflies, porcupines, and fish that jump out of the water when standing on wooden platforms.  Be careful when walking on the bridge, because some of the logs will give way, causing Hefty to fall with them.  Birds will allow him to cross certain areas, but he just keep jumping on them to keep them from sinking under his weight. He can also pick up a springy plant by pressing Down when he's near it, and then pressing Down again to place it wherever he needs it.

Level 4 — The Black Forest

This level is similar to The Forest, except that the main threats are Black Flies that circle around certain mushroom platforms, and Black Smurfs that hop around.  Be careful not to let either of them touch Hefty, or he will be turned into a Black Smurf, costing you a life.  He can hop onto either of these things to get rid of them.

Boss 1 — The Carnivorous Plant

After leaving The Black Forest, Hefty will face off against this multiple-headed plant that likes to eat Smurfs.  Use the springy plant to help Hefty jump on each of the heads to knock them out one at a time.  But be careful -- with each hit a plant head takes, a Black Smurf will come out to harrass Hefty.  Defeat this boss and Hefty will be able to free Jokey for the next level.

Level 5 — The Lake

A two-part level.  In the first part, Jokey must get across the lake by riding on the backs of ducks while avoiding flies and frogs.  In the second part, he must get across a terrain littered with haunted swordlike totems, spiders, and ghosts, while watching out for lightning strikes in certain places.  There are also broken hourglasses that block Jokey's way, which he can blow up by using his surprises.

Level 6 — The Field

Another two-part level.  In both parts, Hefty must use leaves in a series of hedges to springboard his way up certain vertical shafts, while avoiding big drops of water, porcupines, spiders, and worms.  In the second half, the worms start spinning around, and the porcupines start bouncing around, so be extra careful around them.

Level 7 — The Dam

Hefty starts at the bottom of the dam and must make his way to the top by finding springy plants that will enable him to hop his way up the platforms.  Besides worms and butterflies, Hefty must watch out for the annoying Howlibird at the top of the dam who dumps acorns on any Smurf trying to make his way to the top!

Level 8 — The Swamp

Hefty now has to go pond-hopping across the swamp, jumping on top of the heads of frogs as they bob up and down in the water as well as waterbugs that skim across back and forth in certain areas.  Flies are his only enemy here, so be careful.  Also, Hefty can jump across certain areas using vines, but these vines are very slippery, so he has to keep jumping to keep himself on the vine.

Boss 2 — The Snake

A snake goes coiling around on two branches, ready to stop and strike Hefty at a moment's notice.  Make sure he times his jumps right to hit the snake in the head.  After a few good hits, the snake will release the key for freeing Brainy.

First Bonus Level

This level usually occurs around this point in the game when your Smurf hero collects 25 stars.  Here Hefty steers a raft downstream to collect bonus items while avoiding rocks, vines, and branches that block his way.  Getting pushed off the left edge of the screen will prematurely end the bonus level.

Level 9 — The Cave

Now it's Brainy's turn in a two-part level.  In both parts he must navigate through a cave using a lighted candle to guide his way.  Certain sections of the cave are blocked by boulders, so Brainy must find detonator plungers to blast the boulders out of the way.  Besides keeping himself from falling into pits, Brainy must watch out for bats in the first section, and rolling and/or dropping boulders in the second section.  Use the springy plants to make him jump to higher ledges.

Level 10 — The Mountain

Hefty returns for another two-part level.  Here in both parts, he must jump up and across ledges as well as crawl through narrow spaces to get across this mountainous region.  He must find detonator plungers to blast away boulders blocking his path.  Butterflies, crows, rabbits, and jumping fish provide the main threats.

Level 11 — The Mine

Hefty goes for a little ride down the winding mineshaft on this level.  To keep his cart on the track, the player must hit Button B when Hefty reaches a switch handle before the cart veers down the wrong path and collides with a rock wall.  Also he must duck the various gates that line the track.

Level 12 — The Volcano

Jokey comes back for another two-part level to complete, both of which take place inside a burning volcano.  Besides boulders that needed to be blasted away using his surprise boxes, Jokey must also use springy plants and jump on unstable rock platforms in order to keep one step ahead of the rising pool of lava, or else he'll be cooked!

Boss 3 — The Dragon

Jokey's surprises will certainly come in handy when dealing with the dragon at the end of The Volcano level.  He'll spew flame onto either of the three closest platforms, so Jokey must time his jumps onto the platforms carefully to avoid getting a hot foot while he tosses his giftboxes toward the dragon.  Once you put the reptile's flames out, Jokey can free Greedy from his prison.

Second Bonus Level

This level usually occurs around this point in the game when your Smurf hero collects 25 stars.  Here Hefty rides on the back of Feathers the crane over the snow-covered mountain peaks to collect bonus items.  Make sure Feathers doesn't get pushed off the left edge of the screen by a rocky incline or else the bonus level will end prematurely.

Level 13 — The Descent

Hefty returns to do a little sledding down a treacherous hill full of obstacles such as rocks, trees, and snowmen, while also watching out for ramps that will enable him to jump across icy cold rivers.  Also a snowboarding Yeti shows up every now and then to bump our hero around, and there's an occasional ball of snow that rolls down the hill that would flatten Hefty if it catches up to him.  Collect raspberries along the way to keep this Smurf's strength up.

Level 14 — The Cliff

Greedy lends a hand -- and his delicious cakes -- as he traverses across two logs that will twist and turn when he least expects it, causing him to fall off if he's not careful.  Porcupines and crows provide the main threats here.

Level 15 — Gargamel's Manor House

This level is broken up into three parts:

Part 1 has Hefty trying to ride his way up into the entrance of Gargamel's castle using a soap bubble blown from a pipe.  He must navigate through a thorny maze of branches while watching out for birds, also making sure that he doesn't float up too high or else his bubble will burst.

Part 2 has Greedy inside the dingy laboratory of the evil wizard, contending with snapping plants, black flies that instantly turn blue Smurfs into Black Smurfs, deadly potions, a simmering cauldron, and Gargamel's pet cat Azrael.  Greedy can knock out Azrael for a while by using his cakes as a weapon, but he needs to make sure he gets to the exit before the Smurf-hungry cat wakes up.

Part 3 is the staircase.  Here Greedy must hop his way up to the top where Gargamel awaits, but the route has apples and books bounding down the stairs as well as bats waiting to get their wings on a Smurf.

Final Boss — Gargamel

The evil wizard has Smurfette in his grasp, but he's not willing to part with the angel in blue without a fight!  A Howlibird flies back and forth dumping acorns, so Hefty must make sure the acorns get dumped on the left side of the teeter-totter so he can catapult it into Gargamel's face and force him to fall off the roof.  This will give Hefty the key to Smurfette's cage (and hopefully her heart).  Don't let the wizard get too close to your Smurf!

And there we have it...

The hero gets kissed...

and Gargamel gets...uh, furious!

Differences In The Gameboy Advance Version

The Gameboy Advance adaptation of the Super NES Smurfs game, called Revenge Of The Smurfs, plays pretty much like the original version, with some notable exceptions:

1. The multi-part levels are broken down into separate levels.  Some levels have been expanded on, while some others have been shortened.

2. The player can select which level in each series of levels he wants to play, though all the levels in that series must be played in order to access the boss level, and the boss must be defeated in order to access the next series of levels.

3. There is only one skill level instead of three different skill levels in the Super NES, Mega Drive, and Mega CD versions.  Also the gameplay action is a bit slower.

4. As previously mentioned, the player now has infinite Smurf lives, so there's no need for Smurf dolls to appear in this version.

5. Also as previously mentioned, there are golden Smurf hats that serve as checkpoints when the Smurf hero collects them that allows him to start his next life at the checkpoint instead of back to the beginning of the level.

6. There is no scoring system of any kind, nor is there a timer that limits how much time a player can spend on any given level to complete it.

7. The Mine and The Descent levels are different, modeled after the original Gameboy Smurfs game version of the same levels.

The Mine (GBA Smurfs)

The Descent (GBA Smurfs)

The Old Mine Cart (GB Smurfs)

The Sledge Race (GB Smurfs)

8. The bosses now have life meters that indicate how many more hits they need to be defeated.

9. Passcodes are now included at the end of each completed level.

10. Bonus levels are not featured in this game, though there are mini-games to play that are accessible from the main menu screen.  You start off with one mini-game, with a new one added when your Smurf hero collects all five stars on all levels within a certain section of the game.

1st Mini-Game

Something like a Smurf version of Frogger.  Here your Smurf hero must cross the river and back hopping across on logs in order to get as many raspberries as you can into the basket, while watching out for porcupines, flying fish, and accidentally hopping yourself into the raging river!  Use the crosspad and Button A to make Smurf jump, and use Button R to make him pick up the berry and place it in the basket.

2nd Mini-Game

Your Smurf hero must go through Farmer's garden to collect as many raspberries that sprout up as you can and put them into the basket, while fending off Black Flies that will try to carry off the raspberries with your trusty tuberose pollen shooter.

3rd Mini-Game

Something like a Smurf version of Kaboom! for the Atari 2600.  Here your Smurf hero hop back and forth on floating apples to collect as many acorns and cakes that fall from the bridge as you can, while watching out for Jokey's exploding surprises and also falling into the water.  Use the crosspad and Button B to make Smurf jump across to the left or right.

4th Mini-Game

It's time to fly! Guide Batwing Smurf through the clouds to collect as many stars as possible without letting him fall.  Watch out for crows that will appear to end your hero's flight, as well as air pockets that will propel you faster.  Press Up on the crosspad while repeatedly hitting Button B to make Smurf flap his wings to control his flight.

5th Mini-Game

Give the Howlibird a well-deserved surprise of Jokey's exploding gift boxes!  Use the cross to move Jokey back and forth along the bottom of the screen, and press Up and Button R to send his surprises skyward toward the pesky predator.  Make sure you time your throws carefully, and don't hold on to those gifts for too long, or they will explode in Jokey's face!  Also watch out for Howlibird's occasional low flights over your head!  Press Down to duck when he passes by.
